Are you nearing 45 and have the same skincare routine as you did when you were 20?

If you said yes, we seriously need to have a talk.

As we age our skin becomes more sensitive and thin; therefore, more delicate care should be taken with our skin; especially the skin on our face, neck, and décolletage (the area between the base of the neck and the top of the breasts)

Of course, we still need to cleanse, tone, exfoliate, moisturize, treat, and protect our skin; but, depending on our skin type and preferences, the products and tools we use to do our familiar routine will be different. If you are currently using an abrasive scrub, it can cause micro-tears in the epidermis and should be replaced with a non-abrasive exfoliant. Read on for some great suggestions. Remember, no skincare routine is complete without protecting your skin with sunscreen (see our top pick).

Did you know that oily skin can still become dehydrated?

As we age, there is no reason to shy away from products that promise to hydrate your skin as long as they are oil-free and non-comedogenic. Harshly stripping your skin of all its natural oils can cause your skin to rebel and overproduce more oils to compensate which can incite a vicious cycle that can make acne-prone skin even worse.

NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST HYDRATING GEL CLEANSERUse Neutrogena Hydro Boost Daily Hydrating Facial Cleansing Gel to boost your skin’s hydration. This hydrating gel formula contains hyaluronic acid and is proven to increase skin’s hydration and lock it in, leaving skin feeling refreshingly clean and touchably supple, every time you cleanse. The lightweight cleanser is easy to apply, and the gel transforms into a silky lather that effectively lifts away dirt, oil, and make-up without stripping your skin. It is soap, oil, and paraben-free; ideal for sensitive skin and is non-comedogenic.

ELEMIS PRO-COLLAGEN CLEANSING BALMThis powerful, deep cleansing balm dissolves make-up, daily grime, and pollutants. Luxurious Rose and Mimosa waxes are infused with nourishing Elderberry, Starflower, and OptimegaTM oils and supercharged with anti-aging algae, and Padina Pavonica. Skin is intensely cleansed, nourished, and renewed for a glowing complexion.

Active ingredients are Mimosa and Rose waxes, UK Starflower Oil, UK Elderberry Seed Oil, UK OptimegaOil, Coconut, Shea, Sweet Almond Oil, Padina Pavonica, Vitamin E.

ELTA MD FOAMING FACIAL CLEANSEREltaMD Foaming Facial Cleanser contains an enzyme and amino acid blend that loosens makeup, oil, and other impurities on the skin and in the pores. The rich foam gently lifts those impurities and rinses them away, leaving your skin feeling clean and balanced.

Murad Hydration AHA/BHAIntensive triple-action exfoliator with a proprietary blend of salicylic, lactic, and glycolic acids polishes away dull, dry skin without irritation. Reveals a smoother texture and a brighter, younger-looking complexion.

We feel the whole Murad Hydration Skincare line is fantastic. I was able to personally try several Murad products while I was Interpreting a Cosmetology Class at Pasadena City College in California. I became a fan! All cosmetology students at the Beauty college use Murad products on their clients because they really work and make a noticeable difference.

Murad Hydration ToneUltra-hydrating alcohol-free face mist instantly balances the skin’s natural pH while lifting impurities to enhance the benefits of the treatments that follow.

Klair’s Supple Preparation TonerIt feels like a fresh burst of pure water when KLAIR’S toner hydrates and calms your sensitive skin post-cleansing. KLAIR’S toner smooths the skin while maintaining the optimal pH balance to aid in the absorption of the other products to come. It’s infused with various plant extracts and soothing ingredients that blend harmoniously for a calming,  non-irritating, super hydrating toner that is perfect for sensitive skin.

Its fast absorption and enhanced hydration leaves skin with a healthy glow and higher moisture retention capabilites. The Renewal Toner is formulated with a luxe moisturizer that rapidly absorbs into the skin and prolongs the hydration factor by as much as 20% over the other conventional toners made with hyaluronic acid and beta-glucan. It’s ideal for dry, sensitive, normal, combination, and even oily skin types.

M-61’s Powerglow Peel squares – These squares are gentle enough to use daily and are pre-soaked with glycolic and salicylic acids, vitamin K (great for healing acne scars), and bilberry extract to even out skin tone.

Bliss Incredi-Peel – These powerful pre-soaked pads can be used 2 to 3 times a week at night to gently exfoliate your skin all night long. *(can be irritating to sensitive skin)

Drunk Elephant’s resurfacing T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial – This luxe facial mask can be used as a weekly exfoliant treatment and is formulated with 25% AHA’s and a blend of glycolic, tartaric, lactic, and citric acids.

Moisturize – we still like the ProteinPlump by the skin institute which we featured as the number one pick in our “Best Moisturizers for Skin over 40”, blog.

We like  Murad Hydration Hydro-Dynamic eye cream.

Your morning ritual should always include sunscreen. Our research found Anthelios Melt-In Sunscreen Milk SPF 60 to be one of the best.

Firming Enhancements & Masks

For tightening and special occasions, Vogue suggests Natura Bisse Diamond Mask or for about half the price, try Strivectin Powerlift Instant Tightening Mask.

For puffiness, Vogue’s pick was Skyn Iceland’s Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels

For extra hydration, we like Tatcha’s Luminous Dewy Skin Mask: Nourishing Single-Use Mask Infused with Green Tea, Rice, and Algae (20 ml | 0.68 oz)

To enhance and quicken the firming of any sagging skin try using a tool such as the electric luxe NuFace Mini Facial Toning Device (comes together with a special firming cream) or a less expensive option is the very beautiful GRACE & STELLA Rose Quartz Facial Roller that sells for under $15.00 on Amazon.

I love to shop and therefore I am... Whether it be high-end designer items, something as mundane as a cat treat taste test performed by my four favorite furry friends, an unusual gadget I spotted on eBay, or a one of a kind deal I couldn't pass up on Amazon; I love to share my opinion, views, and experiences with the products or services I love (or find out I hate), because I believe you'll love (or hate) them too! Who better to get them down and dirty on the products you are considering for purchase than a real live consumer who actually uses and loves or hates the products? C'mon, you know you want to be "N' The Kno"!
